AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN
255 AM CDT THU MAR 15 2012
.SHORT TERM...LOOKING AT RADAR TRENDS OVER THE LAST 24 HOURS IT IS
EASY TO SEE THAT THE ATMOSPHERE ACROSS THE MID STATE HAS BECOME
INCREASINGLY MOIST AND UNSTABLE. EVEN EARLY THIS MORNING...A CLUSTER
OF THUNDERSTORMS WAS OBSERVED ALONG THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU, ONE OF
WHICH DROPPED QUARTER-SIZE HAIL AT MONTEREY. ISOLATED SHOWERS
WERE OBSERVED BETWEEN NASHVILLE...MURFREESBORO AND WAYNESBORO.
CONVECTIVE PARAMETERS WILL BE ELEVATED TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY AND A
TREND TOWARD MORE WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED.
MOS POPS CERTAINLY REFLECT THIS AND AVERAGE BETWEEN 50% AND 80% OVER
OUR FORECAST AREA. LOCAL ENHANCEMENT OF CONVECTION WILL LIKELY OCCUR
IN RESPONSE TO UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVES RIPPLING NORTHEASTWARD OUT
OF NORTHEAST TEXAS AND THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.
THE STRONGEST SHORTWAVE THAT IS EXPECTED TO TRIGGER THE MOST
WIDESPREAD CONVECTION TODAY SHOWED UP NICELY ON SATELLITE WATER
VAPOR IMAGERY OVER NORTH-CENTRAL TEXAS AT 06Z. PATCH OF CLOUDS OVER
ARK-LA-TX AREA IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FEATURE. IF IT
CONTINUES MOVING AT ITS CURRENT SPEED IT SHOULD REACH MEMPHIS
AROUND NOON, AND CROSS MIDDLE TENNESSEE DURING THE HEAT OF THE
DAY. SINCE IT WILL BE CROSSING OUR AREA DURING THE AFTERNOON WE
SHOULD REAP MAXIMUM BENEFIT IN REGARD TO THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE.
WILL PROBABLY GO WITH LIKELY POPS OVER THE NORTHWESTERN TWO-THIRDS
OF OUR FORECAST AREA TODAY, WHERE 1000-500MB MEAN RH IS EXPECTED
TO INCREASE TO OVER 70%. THIS IS ALSO WHERE THE LOW LEVEL JET WILL
BE STRONGEST. THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE A POSSIBILITY FOR ISOLATED
SEVERE STORMS TODAY, ESPECIALLY OVER NORTHWESTERN AREAS INVOF
STRONGEST LOW LEVEL JET.
Had a severe thunderstorm warning this morning after 1:00 am or so. Saw 1 inch hail, good bit of lightning and some wind, don't think it was 60 mph, but it was still blowing pretty hard. Probably see some more storms today. Hopefully nothing damaging. Everyone stay safe.

Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
I'm late to the party, but finally got setup with GRLevel3. Awesome piece of software, can't believe it took me this long!
Edit: Oh snap! You can configure it to automatically save scans to a server via FTP. Might have to add a radar page to this site that has regularly updated scans at different locations and zoom levels in TN. This would allow for Mac/iPad/iPhone/whatever viewing without having to run the Windows software!
Edit 2: AND you can run multiple instances at the same time! Nerdgasm...

Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
SVR watch for most of middle TN/KY...hopefuly some of these make it eastward before we lose the fuel/sun.
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
FYI guests, we've given members access to the live level 3 radar scans. We're testing it for now and currently have five radar locations with base reflectivity and velocity. I thought I'd mention it here in case we have some members that weren't logged in and didn't see the other thread. Carry on.
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
Yes..that is a Mesoscale convective system and NO its not summer time..lol
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
Check out that Huntsville radar, nice!
Edit: some very impressive cloud to ground lightning here right now. Enjoy the show east TN.

Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
Had some impressive hail and extremely frequent lightning. Earlier today there was about 1.5 inches of hail on the ground. Very heavy rain and flash flooding too. If we have another day like this tomorrow the streams are really going to be overflowing.

Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
Man it's like it is actually summer already...and now the evening thunderstorms are getting ready to move through the area. Extremely early for all this...Im starting to think that summer may even be cooler than normal.
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
I'm loving these warm days and evening storms. Got a good one booming right now.

Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
This was what the outskirts of Newport looked like right before it got dusk dark...I believe those are mammatus clouds.
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
Another day another cluster of thunderstorms moving across the state. One severe warning currently in middle TN.
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
This one wild ass pattern with MCS's running rampant and way above normal temperatures...cant say I have ever seen such a pattern in March.
Re: Spring 2012 weather discussion
A line of late night t-storms is about to wake the east TN region up
