The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is changing

Starting May 15th, just a few weeks before the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, the scale will be adjusted slightly, affecting the thresholds of Category 3–5 hurricanes:

Hurricane scale adjustment

Category 3

Old Range
111–130 mph

NEW Range
111–129 mph

Category 4

Old Range
131–155 mph

NEW Range
130–156 mph

Category 5

Old Range
156 mph or higher

NEW Range
157 mph or higher

The adjustment is to resolve issues related to converting a hurricane's measured wind speed from knots to miles per hour.
