Picking out Low Pressure and Cold Fronts.
This is for pure learning experience here. On this radar, I have shown you where the Low Pressure is exactly with this storm. The swirl on the Radar in Kansas is where I have put the capital Red L which means low pressure. Then I have black lines showing the wind flow around the low pressure system. On the backside you have winds coming out of the northwest which brings cooler, drier air down. You also have wind feeding into the low pressure system. Then you can clearly see the cold front I have out lined on the radar, that is where thunderstorms usually fire. Winds out in front of the front are coming from the southwest which brings moisture from the gulf. I hope this helps your learning experience.

Re: adams wx casting thread
Good post Adam...you might want to consider the general position of the low pressures warm front also
Re: adams wx casting thread
Your right, I couldn't really pick out a warm front on this system though.

I always use a current surface map when I cant picki it up on radar or sat

Re: adams wx casting thread
Bruce brought this up but here you go.
Almost summer like pattern we are settling into right now, A high pressure around Bermuda has set up called a Bermuda High and it is pumping up warmer air and more humid temperatures. At the same time this actaully decreases our chances of seeing severe weather because it causes the Low pressure systems to go farther north and the better dynamics farther north. So why you would think that this very warmer air increases our severe weather chances that is not the case. What we need to cause severe weather is the low pressure system to be farther south and a powerful cold front so the cold and warm air can battle each other.

This is in no way effecting us, but I just wanted to show you all what a supercell looks like on the radar. A supercell is one discrete cell that can be very severe and produce tornadoes. In fact tornadoes most of the time form from supercells. But has you can see in the picture, the rotation signature is on the southwest side of the storm, the yellow arrows. A tornado has formed on the southwest side of the storm which is were tornadoes usually form. Then farther north in the storm you have the hail core which is where the updraft of the thunderstorm is. This storm is moving Northwest like the most supercells will do. Well there is a lesson on supercells hope you enjoyed it! Then you also have a very good couplet on the storm where you can see rotation by using velocity.

Interesting that the hail core is on the north side. I did not know that, thanks Adam!

Re: adams wx casting thread
Pretty great picture of showing how big this storm system actually is. This is called a cutoff low because it is "cutoff" from the rest of the jet stream. The jet stream right now is up in Canada which is why we have had such warm air. This is also the reason we have been very dry, because the Bermuda High we have had has shifted the jet stream north and all of the Low Pressure systems have went north. This will start to affect our area tommorow with about 1-2 inches of rain expected. This picture is courtesy of Toot!

Re: adams wx casting thread
This is in Indiana and will not effect us, but since it is a slow day I want to show you why you can not let your guard down even when there is only a severe thunderstorm watch out. This storm is rotating and becoming very dangerous, it has pretty good rotation on it. See Thunderstorms are always rotating and even more so in spring and summer. So never let your guard down if you only have a severe thunderstorm watch out. Anything can happen especially if you have a very vigorous circulation with the low pressure like we have here.
EDIT: A funnel cloud has been reported.

Re: adams wx casting thread
Set up of a classic supercell.
This is a picture of a supercell near Oklahoma City it is not the best one I have seen but it will work for this lesson , as you can see the Hail Core is on the north side of the system and the rotation is on the southside which is where a tornado would form. Almost every large tornado has developed out of a supercell because if they stay solitary they can get really wound up and have a very tight circulation. Most of the time the tigher the rotation the bigger and more dangerous the tornado. I hope this gave some of you a good picture of how a supercell works!

Re: adams wx casting thread
This is a classic supercell here, you can see the inflow notch which is where the arrow is pointing left, that is where the wind feeds into the tornado. Then you can see the wind going to the right where the hook is. This is what weather enthusiests like me look for when looking for rotation. There is clear rotation with this storm, and you can see the way the wind influences the radar. You can see the turning and the way the storm acts. This storm has very good shear on it.
