Re: May Severe Weather
Must be some decent updrafts taking place this afternoon. I noticed a towering cumulus with a pileus for a brief moment a little while ago. Always fascinating to see these form on the top of a developing thunderhead. They usually don't last very long, though.

Re: May Severe Weather
Big gully woresher just came thru. Big funders too. I'm glad too. We needed the rain. Only thing now is, it'll be all muggy afterward. Yuck.
Re: May Severe Weather
Interesting about the Pileus, thanks.
We got ourselves a little hailer in east Knox now.

Re: May Severe Weather
Im thankful for the rain but what a disorganized mess of a system this POS is!!
Re: May Severe Weather
At least for the time being the atmosphere seems stabilized. I no longer see any signs of updrafts in the form of cumulus clouds. Sky covered with altostratus, and the earlier convection seems to be waning. Any areas that missed the rain, and had sun most of the day could still be unstable enough for some random pop up showers/storms.

Re: May Severe Weather
Looks like the WEAK sauce front has made it into TN without holding any organized convection..lol
Re: May Severe Weather
I got a good soaking out of it but not enough to rational not watering the garden. One of these days I'm going to break down and actually buy a weather station to record stuff.

Davis Vantage Pro is a good one for the money.
Or if you just want a really good rain gauge, here is where you can get the official one used by CoCoRaHS' observers.

Re: May Severe Weather
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MORRISTOWN TN
414 AM EDT TUE MAY 8 2012
.SHORT TERM...(TODAY AND TONIGHT)...COLD FRONT ACROSS MIDDLE TN WILL MOVE SE INTO MRX CWA THIS AFTERNOON AND THROUGH THE APPALACHIANS TONIGHT. WEAKENING UPPER SHORT WAVE MOVING EAST THROUGH THE MRX CWA THIS MORNING. FEATURES DO NOT PHASE VERY WELL FOR GOOD DYNAMIC SETUP FOR CONVECTION. MID LEVEL FLOW BECOMES ZONAL AND DOES NOT SUPPORT LIFT. HEATING WILL BE HINDERED BY HIGH LEVEL CANOPY. SO HAVE BACKED OFF ON POPS FOR TODAY ESPECIALLY ACROSS WESTERN AREAS. FRONTAL ZONE WILL LINGER EARLY TONIGHT ACROSS EASTERN AREAS SUPPORTING CONTINUED CONVECTION. LATER TONIGHT SOUTHWESTERLY UPPER FLOW INCREASES IN ADVANCE OF APPROACHING TROUGH. CLOUD COVER WILL INCREASE TOWARD MORNING. DID NOT STRAY FROM SIMILAR MODEL TEMPERATURE GUIDANCE BUT LEANED A BIT WARM FOR TONIGHT.
.LONG TERM...(WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY)...SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT FINALLY SHIFTS EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS WEDNESDAY BUT PREFER THE NAM MODEL WHICH DEVELOPS SECONDARY IMPULSE ALONG FRONT WEDNESDAY MORNING AND THEN SHIFTS NORTHEAST THROUGHOUT THE DAY. CONSIDERABLE CLOUDS EASTERN SECTIONS WITH GOOD CHANCE SHOWERS AND LIKELY NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS. FOLLOWED CLOSER TO NAM TEMPERATURES FOR HIGHS. WEDNESDAY NIGHT UPPER TROUGH MOVES IN BEHIND COLD FRONT WITH CLEARING SKIES AND MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES. THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY MORE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES AS HIGH PRESSURE AND NORTHWEST FLOW PATTERN KEEPS REGION DRY. FRIDAY WEAK UPPER LOW DEVELOPS OVER TEXAS AND SPREADS MOISTURE AND SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS INTO THE SOUTHERN PLAINS AND MS VALLEY SATURDAY. THE UPPER LOW AND ANOTHER COLD FRONT MOVE OUT OF THE MS AND OHIO VALLEYS SUNDAY AND INTO THE TN VALLEY MONDAY. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE LAST TWO DAYS OF THE EXTENDED PERIOD. TEMPERATURES WILL STAY NEAR SEASONAL THE LAST COUPLE DAYS.
Ho-hum.... Maybe the next system will be more fun.

Re: May Severe Weather
The one saving grace about the upcoming pattern is it looks much cooler than the last few weeks. No more 80's for the rest of this week, and the GFS Ensembles have a cool look to them going into next week as well. That will at least decrease the amount of moisture lost from the ground due to evaporation. Even so, a widespread soaking rain is still needed.

Re: May Severe Weather
We actually need some sun this morning, if we hope to gain enough instability in east TN for some storms later. It's pretty cloudy in my neck of the woods right now.

Re: May Severe Weather
Sun finally came out here and that seemed to elevate the patchy light drizzle to frog strangler status. Still pretty weak sauce though.

I do believe you are correct, sir. Currently there is a big grey cloud hovering over my house, ominously.
Re: May Severe Weather
Getting a pretty good little downpour this morning. Looks like Adam finally getting some rain as well, per the morning radar.

We have a nice little shot of moisture/rain moving over TN this morning. I'm sure it's a welcome sight for farmers...
