The 18z GFS trended much colder and would likely mean a couple of days at or near freezing for many locales. This will need to be watched

I'm sitting at 38 degrees and under the frost advisory. I hate living in such a cool spot at times like these. The apple trees didn't bud at all last year but this year they are doing great. Probably won't survive the week at this rate.

I feel your pain. I used to live in London, KY. We had regular late freezes almost on a yearly basis, even when areas further north were not as cold. My parents still live there, and they don't put out their garden until May 1st for that very reason. Just checked London's temp this morning, and they are down to 34F. My folks live in a low lying area out in the country, so I'm sure they got down to 29 or 30 last night. They will probably have another frost/freeze next week as well. (For comparison's sake, the observation at Lexington, Ky--80 miles to the north--was 39F at the same time.)

I ended up at 32.9 with a pretty heavy frost. I have a low of 32 forecast for next week, which will probably mean upper 20s.

Any of the vegetation around your neck of the woods damaged by the frost?
Got down to 36F here yesterday morning...a little frost on the windshield, but that was all. Next week does look like frost will be likely on Wed/Thur morn. Hope we don't get below freezing for more than an hour or two--if at all-- here. I'm sure in colder spots, a freeze is going to happen. facepalm However, duration makes a big difference in how much damage occurs.

Had to scrape the windshield this morning. Luckily I found my ice scraper in the trunk, been a while since it had seen the light of day.

Possible April Freeze - Page 3 Empty Re: Possible April Freeze

Post by WxFreak 2012-04-09, 11:42 am

Most deciduous trees can handle a frost with temps in the lower to mid 30's without too much damage. In 2007 a killing freeze occured when temps dropped into the 20's and stayed there for about 6 hours during the night. That was enough to kill all the new vegetation coming out on all the trees. As long as we stay above freezing, or don't drop below for an extended period of time, most trees will be fine.

Garden plants, and fruit trees that have bloomed, are a different story. Blooms on fruit trees are especially vulnerable to frost damage, and local orchards will probably be watching the thermometer very closely this week.

I'm going to water the hell out of my garden at night before the frosty temps come in. As well as run my electric fan all night over the vegetation. Looking at 36 in the city, so it will probably be fine between watering, fan, and bed sheets.

I've never had any damage to my gardens as long as temps are above about 28.

Wednesday Night: Areas of frost after 2am. Otherwise, clear, with a low around 28. North wind between 5 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

This has trended colder and colder for me. It's went from 32, to 31, to now 28.

Possible April Freeze - Page 3 Empty Re: Possible April Freeze

Post by WxFreak 2012-04-10, 8:02 am

There is a lot of variability in night time temps across TN, as everyone here knows, I’m sure. Some areas will probably be a little colder than the forecast lows, while others won’t be quite as cold. It’s a borderline situation for me. I live in a wooded area a stone’s throw away from a large body of water (Douglas Lake). When the wind is calm on cold nights, the lake releases “steam,” that sometimes surrounds the lake in a fog bank; thus keeping the temp/dew point from bottoming out as in surrounding areas. I’m sure I will have some frost, but not sure if I will manage to drop below 32F.

Hope everyone’s plants/gardens fare well over the next few nights.

The strong winds should keep the frost at bay in most areas tonight and in the a.m... sheltered valleys is a different story as they could possibly see frost. Tomorrow night may be the best chance of a heavy frost elsewhere.

38.4F this morning as the sun rises at 7:00 a.m. No major frost issues here. One night down, two to go. I think tonight will be the one to watch.

I bottomed out at 36.5F. The dewpoint is so depressed, though, that there was no frost OR dew this morning. The air is just too dry.

Hmmm. Temps seem to be rising pretty fast this morning. Knoxville already to 50F, and 47F in outlying areas. Forecast high is only 56F, but with full sun today, and just 6 degrees of separation Wink , think we will surpass it. Lower 60's will probably be reached, I would surmise.

AFDMRX

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MORRISTOWN TN
1022 AM EDT WED APR 11 2012

.DISCUSSION...
A LARGE AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL DOMINATE THE OHIO AND TN VALLEY
REGIONS TODAY. CLOUDS ACROSS WV AND WESTERN VA MAY SKIRT THE
EXTREME NE FRINGES OF THE AREA...OTHERWISE SUNNY SKIES ARE
EXPECTED. OBSERVED TEMPS ARE RUNNING A LITTLE ABOVE FORECAST IN
SOME AREAS...AND 06Z MOS GUIDANCE IS A BIT ABOVE FORECAST AS
WELL...SO THE UPDATE WILL BUMP UP FORECAST HIGH TEMPS
SLIGHTLY...MAINLY CENTRAL AND SOUTH.

DECISIONS ABOUT UPGRADING THE FREEZE WATCH TO A WARNING WILL BE
MADE THIS AFTERNOON ONCE THE 12Z MODEL GUIDANCE ARRIVES. AT THIS
TIME...IT APPEARS THAT AT LEAST THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE AREA WILL
SEE NEAR TO BELOW FREEZING TEMPS...WHICH WILL NECESSITATE A
WARNING...WITH AN ADVISORY ELSEWHERE. THE PRECISE LOCATION FOR THE
WARNING WILL BE PINNED DOWN WITH THE AFTERNOON FORECAST PACKAGE.
Looks like MRX thinks so too...

Had a little frost in the low areas this morning. My house sits on a ridge, so I still ha wind at my house. The bottom of the h ill was a different story. I usually don't get completely calm at my house, so I may not get too much frost tonight. Hope not anyway
