Snow expansion change (Oct 10-present)

Post by skillsweather on 2012-10-11, 11:29 am

I'm going to take the snow coverage picture and copy and save each one on here so we can see how the snow evolves so maybe we can know if any connection between the two or something. Just something to keep an eye on..
If its to small for you to see click on them and it brings up a bigger picture. Made them smaller so we can fit them all on here.. lol

I wasn't trying to discourage you, just pointing out a similar thread. It's a neat idea.

It's time to look at the advance of Eurasian snowcover and seriously consider its implications on the upcoming winter for those in the southeast. 18 days into the month and we are on pace to tie or even outdo 2009. NOAA is still trying to figure out what to forecast temperature wise and going with equal chances on temps. With snowcover exploding and forecast to continue, along with an increasing potential for a weak west based NINO and a sunspot max well below other maxes I think we could enjoy one of the best winters of the last 3 decades.

Wow your right snow has really blossomed especially for 2 days time frame. I ain't going to post a new image till the 24th but I can already tell that next one is going to have the most difference in snowcover. (so far)

October 17th to the 24th changed nicely. So far looks like we will have alot of cold air to tap into whenever we need it this winter.

I will post this here because its well related to the topic.

Most of the country ended up below normal for October! Does this mean anything? Yes it does..this is normally a sign of an impending cold winter. It dont always work out that way.. but the majority of the time it does. This is one of the clearest and most trusted signals one can have for a cold winter in the eastern US! There are lots of reasons for this..the main one being above normal snow expansion over the Northern Hemisphere during October!

Here is October 2009

This October

Not as cold as 2009 but still plenty cold for the majority of the country. This is related to the negative October AO which caused the vigorous snow growth this October. This signal STRONGLY argues for a colder than normal winter. Its not a sure thing (Nothing in the world of science is) but its as close as you will come to a sure thing!!

Bump just incase anyone knows past years ones they can compare to how its unfolded so far and get a better understanding on what years its similar and what year its not. Smile Ultimate reason I doing this is so We all will know how the snow grew over the fall and winter and can know well hey it grew fast here but we didnt get no snow this winter or it didnt grow there but we got alot of snow.. Things like that Smile Ofc what it really amounts to is all the patterns and blockings and all the other fancy terms but still fun to look at this and guess based on snow instead of numbers and pictures computer puts out.

Now.. where the snowpack really impacts our wx pattern!

On this date last year

This year

That is about twice the coverage of last year and a much deeper snowpack already setup

I really should of used the different map cause I noticed this map is good sometimes but that map shows the depth and difference this year is the depth of canada is way deeper then it has been even in 2009.

Well last year this didn't really prove nothing but Here is October 17th of this year vs last years above. I wont be doing no other ones unless major change. Only difference I can see is much more ice coverage vs last year snow is little less that I see.

This year October 17, 2013
