Re: Hurricane Sandy (Halloblizzard)
If you are wondering what makes this system a hybrid (part tropical/part non tropical) its the core of the low pressure system. Even after Sandy has phased/Merged with a non tropical trough of low pressure it still shows a core in the mid to upper levels that is much warmer than its surroundings. A true mid latitutude/non tropical system will not show warm temps associated with the core of the system!

Re: Hurricane Sandy (Halloblizzard)
I like the "Halloblizzard" alot more than the "Frankenstorm" name. Would be so nice to see snow from it here, but will be happy if some can fall in NE TN and elsewhere. A rarity indeed, a possible storm of this magnitude.

Lmao^^
Good morning..the model battle continues this morning with the GFS still much further east than the Euro. Have noticed that the hurricane models are now starting to group around the euro outcome though. Its hard for me to ignore how consistent teh European model has been with Sandy and it is the outcome i'm continuing to go with.

The Euro is still coming West lol I am telling you most of the computer models have been all over the place with any sort of tropical system.Toot wrote:Lmao^^

Saw this posted on American:
Also Euro backed off a tad but still very impressive:

Won't have to drive far up I-81 to get in on the action.
Mark Reynolds WJHL in the Tricities, TN mentioned the possibility of accumulating snow for ktri. Interesting to mention it this many days in advance. Also said they would have to pull out the OLD records to see if they can find any measurable snow in the month of October. Pretty incredible when you stop and think about it.

Re: Hurricane Sandy (Halloblizzard)
Looking at satellite its clear to me that Sandy is already transitioning into a non tropical system.

You sure that isn't just the sheer from the ULL out in the atlantic?

Re: Hurricane Sandy (Halloblizzard)
I would say part of the presentation is due to shear.
but part of it is also due to interaction with baroclinicity. Sandy will start to resemble a mid latitude system more and more from here on out.

Re: Hurricane Sandy (Halloblizzard)
Here is a good write-up on Sandy that is for general consumption by the public. We've discussed most of this here but this might be good to pass on to family and friends that aren't weather nerds but would like to learn more about the situation.

Re: Hurricane Sandy (Halloblizzard)
Regarding this business of the full moon resulting in higher tides:
Spring Tides
When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low. This is known as a spring high tide. Spring tides are especially strong tides (they do not have anything to do with the season Spring). They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.
Neap Tides
During the moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel each other. The result is a smaller difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap tide. Neap tides are especially weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another (with respect to the Earth). Neap tides occur during quarter moons.

Makes me hungry. I now have a sudden craving for sushi and milk, especially Stephanie Abrams. I think she's hot in a sexy kind of way.

Looks like most of the models are backing down from the more wide spread snows for our area.

12z euro is pretty much the same as 0z..not really backing down from anything
Here's the 12z

0z

Almost identical..the 12z is just a click north of the 0z!

The 12z is warmer, which leads to less snow below 2000-2500 feet.

The above images show its no warmer at 850mb. Matter of fact the 12z is colder at 850.. I havent checked surface temps...are they warmer?

This is as expansive as snowfall gets on 12z. Way down from 12z yesterday and somewhat down from 0z last night.
