A very strong and vigorous tropical wave nearing the central Atlantic has been showing signs of organization throughout the day and it will soon enter a much more favorable enviroment for further development over the next few days. I would expect this tropical wave to eventually become the next named storm of the season which will be called "Chantal".

At this point many of the models that are ran on this particular area of interest suggest it could possibly affect some part of the United States. We will have to watch this one closely over the next week or so! Below is a look at the tropical wave itself and the model projections of where they think this one is going.

The strong and vigorous tropical wave located in the central Atlantic ocean continues to show signs of better organization this morning but it still lacks a closed surface circulation. I imagine it will close off sometime today or tonight as it continues to track westward into a more conducive enviroment for development.

There it will likely form into a tropical cyclone as begins to turn and track towards the Leeward islands in more of west-northwest direction. How strong it becomes there will likely be key to whether it can survive more hostile conditions of the bigger islands and stronger wind shear.

Right now the only model suggesting it survives and makes a landfall on the US mainland is the Canadian model which turns it into a beast of hurricane landfalling it on the South Carolina coastline!! While this outcome is unlikely it is certainly possible. Below is a look at the Canadian model showing what would be damaging situation especially for the beaches of SC.

We now officially have tropical storm "Chantal" out in the central Atlantic! She currently has winds of 40MPH and a minimum central pressure of 1008Mb. She is expected to move in a general WNW direction over the next few days. Here is the latest modeled track projections overlayed onto the tropical atlantic satellite image

Oh good grief. I'm going to PC Beach on the 13th for a week. Please keep her in the Atlantic.

Good evening..Tropical Storm Chantal entered the Carribean sea this afternoon and despite the disorganization seen on satellite images she has also strengthened some compared to yesterday. The latest fix on Chantal is sustained winds of 65MPH and a minimum central pressure of 1006Mb.

She is racing towards the island of Hispaniola at a high speed of 26 MPH and tropical storm warnings have been posted for the islands Puerto Rico..Hispaniola.. and some of the Bahamian islands too. It is possible that she could become a hurricane before she makes a landfall on Hispaniola but it's not really expected.

We will have to watch and see what's left of Chantal after she re-emerges over the open water of the Bahamas where she could possibly reorganize and threaten the southeastern US but this system will likely be steered westward and not affect the Mid Atlantic or the northeastern states but I will keep you updated. Anyways..here is a great satellite shot showing the disorganiaztion and raggedness of Chantal's cloud structure.Tropical Storm Chantal 970240_443612879079803_827005146_n
