A Video Account of the April Super Cell Outbreak in East Tennessee
Here is some very raw footage taken at my house in west Knoxville during the April event. This situation changed me from:
to:
Seriously once you have kids, threats are perceived differently. Anyway, here is the raw footage from April 27th 2011. I'll never look at a super cell threat the same way again.

That storm system was like an excellent roller coaster. Its fun, but it also has its scary moments as well. I was literally thinking 'how in the world are we gonna make it out of this alive' around the 8 o'clock timeframe when the storms began tearing through my city. Luckily, we never lost power (somehow, don't ask me how though) and we were always up to date with the radar and information and stuff like that. It was exciting while it was here, but I never want to go through it again.

It most definately changed my view on severe and supercells too...i'll never forget looking at hi res radar and seeing three to four very well organized and rotating supercells in the Great East Tn valley at the same time that evening. I can only describe it as a wolfpack hunting down some prey...luckily they didnt find me Aside from some nice hail evrybody in my family made it through without injury..allthough my mamaws house was nearly destroyed while she was away...God rest her soul
If there is one thing that 2011 will be remembered for..it will be this severe outbreak. There were at least two more signifigant hail storms to roll through later in the year...2011 will never be forgotten by me in terms of severe weather.
Oh yeah...I enjoyed the video Stove especially the part were I assume you said "Explain the radar!!" Classic wx nerd response to local coverage

Dude! Great video. It was crazy, man! Our hail storm came through at 8:30 pm and we have a tin roof. It sounded like a thousand horses running on our roof. My kids were screaming, my cats when running through the house scared to death and I was just standing there like an idiot with my mouth hanging open watching golfball sized hail rain down. It absolutely demolished my car, knocked every window out. Insane. I could do with never seeing that kind of storm ever again in my lifetime.
BTW, Stove. You got some cute kids.

Thanks for the video compliments. I know I sound like a dork in it but in the candid heat of the moment that is just how it played out. I did say "explain the radar!" He was rambling on about drills in the schools when cells were bearing down heh.

Awesome video Stove, and nice lookin' family there. As we approach the 1 year anniversary, good to look back and remember.
And from one dork to another--nice commentary.
Actually glad I found this. I wasn't home that night. I was runnin. LOL. A friend and I put my dog in the car and headed toward the mountains. I noticed that NC wasn't in the higher risk area, and a simple look at the radar made it clear the tornadic storms were heading more north than east--right up the valley. Being a weather geek, I knew what they were capable of. Long story short: I ended up getting caught in Newport, near Wal-mart as the tornado hit over there. Bout s**t my pants. The intense, continuous lightning was enough to scare the crap out of my buddy.
Anyway, seeing the vid lets me know what probably happened at my house while I was being chased by the storm (the hail/lightning/wind). That night gave new meaning to the word Storm Chaser for me.

Re: A Video Account of the April Super Cell Outbreak in East Tennessee
Thanks for the compliments. I'll take that outbreak to the grave, it really made an impression on me.
You know something that doesn't get talked about much here locally but was pretty impressive was that the very evening before this outbreak, a tornado ripped through UT campus. It was a relatively small scale one but it changed the landscape. Numerous trees were down, green houses destroyed and some other minor building damage. Shredded vegetation was everywhere. I regret not taking some pictures of the aftermath. It was one of the reasons I left early from work the next day when the outbreak was unfolding to our south and west. I wanted to make dang sure I was home with the family if something like that hit my back yard.
I may have to dig up some old news stories on that UT nader.

Yeah, I hadn't heard of that one either. Must've not rec'd much news coverage.
It was an April (and a spring) for the history books. We'll be talking about it and comparing future events to it, I'm sure.

Re: A Video Account of the April Super Cell Outbreak in East Tennessee
As I've searched around for articles about the storm that hit UT campus the day before the outbreak, I've not found any mentions of an actual tornado on UT Campus. It's possible that was urban legend. I did however find reports that describe the damage from that storm that aligns with what I described above:
http://utdailybeacon.com/news/2011/apr/29/historic-thunderstorms-ravage-campus/
http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2011/apr/27/residents-clean-up-after-storm/
Trees down, greenhouses, etc. It was a dramatic site to see on the way to work that day after for sure.

Re: A Video Account of the April Super Cell Outbreak in East Tennessee
So it appears the storm I was referring to occurred on April 25th, two days before the outbreak.

A boundary across the area triggered thunderstorms in east Tennessee during the afternoon and evening hours. A few became severe producing large hail and damaging thunderstorm wind.
Amateur radio personnel reported several buildings damaged or destroyed by thunderstorm wind at the University of Tennessee hospital property in Knoxville.
Re: A Video Account of the April Super Cell Outbreak in East Tennessee
This "small" storm, at least in comparison to everything else going on, probably just got buried in the amount of weather news happening during this month. April-May 2011 was spring severe weather on steriods.
