AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA
728 AM EDT SAT JUN 30 2012
.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 336 AM EDT SAT JUN 30 2012/
..RECORD SHATTERING AND DANGEROUS HEAT TO CONTINUE...
SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
LATEST ROUND OF OBSERVATIONS AT 3AM INDICATE JUST HOW IMPRESSIVE THIS HEAT WAVE HAS BEEN WITH MANY ATL METRO AND SOUTHERN MOST SITES REMAINING IN THE 80S. LATEST SURFACE ANALYSIS CONTINUES TO SHOW WEAK TROUGH FROM CHARLOTTE THROUGH ATHENS WITH WEAK RIDGING FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE AREA. MAIN FEATURE HOWEVER CONTINUES TO BE STACKED MID AND UPPER LEVEL HIGH FROM 500MB-700MB WHICH IS PARKED RIGHT OVER THE FORECAST AREA. FINDING THAT ANALOGOUS SITES LIKE CIPS AND SOME OF THE ANOMALY FIELDS FORM VARIOUS MODELS ARE OF LITTLE USE AS THIS IS BECOMING A UNIQUE EVENT IN THE RECORD KEEPING ERA FOR THE STATE OF GEORGIA.
SO TO CUT TO THE CHASE...BASED ON YESTERDAYS HIGHS AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THE MODELS...LOOKING LIKE WE WILL SEE VALUES AS HIGH AND IN A FEW CASES A COUPLE OF DEGREES HOTTER THAN YESTERDAY. ANOMALIES CONTINUE TO BE CLOSE TO 99.9999 PERCENT FOR THIS EVENT AND THEREFORE AM NOT SHY ABOUT INDICATING NOT ONLY DAILY RECORD BREAKING BUT ALL TIME RECORD BREAKING FOR SOME SITES. FOR AHN...THIS WOULD BREAK YESTERDAYS VALUES OF 109 AND FOR ATL WILL BE FORECASTING A TIE OF THE ALL TIME RECORD OF 105. SIMPLY PUT...WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF A HISTORIC HEATWAVE FOR OUR AREA WHICH LOOKS TO PERSIST INTO NEXT WEEK.
For this to be an "historic" heatwave for a state as hot as Georgia is really sayin' something.

Things a little more tame today...but scorching none the less
Re: Late June/Early July 2012 Torch From Hell!
KTYS briefly reported a temperature at 41 C or about 106F. We’ll have to see what they record for the official high. Regardless, this heat is incredible for sure. I’m not a big fan of high temperatures, but at least it has given me something to track for a change.

I guess we can say that today was the hottest day in recorded history for East Tennessee with these records and the record at Chattanooga.

I hit my all time record high today since I've been keeping records (2005 )--106.4F, according to my Davis Vantage Pro2.
Absolutely unbelievable.

On a related note, it amazes me to see how many people don’t understand how temperatures are recorded. Facebook pages are full of people who are saying they had highs of 111-117. You probably couldn’t convince them otherwise.

Re: Late June/Early July 2012 Torch From Hell!
I work with some people who have farms, and this latest bout of heat is causing a great deal of concern. Corn is sensitive to drought and heat at certain points in it's life cycle, and crop yield can be significantly reduced if there is no rain combined with high temperatures. Also temps above 100F basically kills corn pollen, and the plant has to produce a "fresh" batch of pollen the following day. Successful pollination can occur even during lengthy periods of high temperatures if soil moisture reserves are adequate to meet the plants' demand, but that is the problem--soil moisture is becoming depleted by this heat and low humidity (for this time of year). We need rain, and we need some cooler weather.

I think the heat was too much for the reporting sensors at TYS. Here is the latest report:
Knoxville, McGhee Tyson Airport
Lat: 35.81 Lon: -83.98 Elev: 962

From OHX AFD:
Well said.
NOTICED THAT THE 8-14 DAY PROG FROM CPC INDICATES THAT WE MIGHT ACTUALLY GET BACK TO NORMAL TEMPS WITH A BETTER CHANCE FOR RAINFALL. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT...ASSUMING YOUR CROPS DON`T DIE FIRST.
Well said.

Wow..you can see the urban heat island this morning. TYS already 83F at 8:00 a.m. I'm 76.6F at the same time.
Of course, it could be worse. Columbia, SC waking up to 81F, but with an oppressive dewpoint of 77F.

Re: Late June/Early July 2012 Torch From Hell!
Knoxville and Chattanooga are actually running at about 3 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday.
The outflow boundary just moved through here. There were a few wind gusts, but it really didn’t do much for temperatures, maybe a short-term .5 degree drop. Still no clouds in the sky.

Yep, I'm already at 98F--and it's only 12:30. If clouds don't develop, we may actually end up with high temps above yesterday's. Craaazzyy.

I’m beginning to wonder about that myself. It is now 100 at Knoxville and 102 in Chattanooga. Temperatures are still running about 3 degrees ahead of yesterday, dewpoints are actually a little lower at KTYS, and 850mb are expected to be similar to yesterday. The wild card is if any clouds can form in the afternoon to keep temperatures down.
I'm at 98 at my house, which is also ahead of yesterday's pace. KTRI got some relief with the clouds and a small rain shower nearby a couple of hours ago.

Looks like 103.5 is my high for the day. We actually have some clouds forming, and even a few towering cumulus--a VERY welcome sight. The clouds probably kept us from punching up to yesterday's highs.

Re: Late June/Early July 2012 Torch From Hell!
Well, when the clouds were overhead my temp actually dropped to around 101. But then the clouds departed, and now I shot right back up to 103.5. My end up being closer to 104 or 105 before the sun begins to lower in the sky.

Hotter than a Vegas hooter
Yes. It is hot as Hell. Returned last week from some WSOP events in Vegas and the Vegas heat can't compare to what we have in the south. In vegas its expected, not 107 in Chattanooga. We have maxed out today at 105 as of the last update. Who knows, it may increase. We have split duty with beer, made from scratch best in the world margaritas and water
