Farmers Almanac Says bundle up this winter
http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/farmers-almanac-nasty-winter-on-tap-for-much-of-us-super-bowl-could-become-storm-bowl/2013/08/25/a24f9360-0daf-11e3-a2b3-5e107edf9897_story.htmlLEWISTON, Maine — The Farmers’ Almanac is using words like “piercing cold,” ‘’bitterly cold” and “biting cold” to describe the upcoming winter. And if its predictions are right, the first outdoor Super Bowl in years will be a messy “Storm Bowl.”
The 197-year-old publication that hits newsstands Monday predicts a winter storm will hit the Northeast around the time the Super Bowl is played at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It also predicts a colder-than-normal winter for two-thirds of the country and heavy snowfall in the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England.
“We’re using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It’s going to be very cold,” said Sandi Duncan, managing editor. Based on planetary positions, sunspots and lunar cycles, the almanac’s secret formula is largely unchanged since founder David Young published the first almanac in 1818.

I know that good for sells with all the words. I like buying Almanacs both kind the Old and the Farmers. I know the 09/10 was cold and snowy down here in SE TN. And in 10/11 they said more or less a repeat. And it happen. Not sure both or which one said it. But it happen when everyone was going the other way. I know they miss a lot, but hey NWS 3 to 4 months out really don't do much, if any better. I like reading them. Have a good one.

You are correct..it is a pay site. Im not trying to promote his site or anything but you wont find a better synoptic forecaster out there. People pay for his knowledge and reputation..you wont find his type of forecasting anywhere elseweathertree4u wrote:

Scroll to the bottom of Robert's website and click on the monthly archives. Those are free to read and he has an entry about his thoughts this winter.

Since ENSO will likely not be much of a driving force this winter here are the best matching 500mb analogs based on the QBO but this is only going back to 1980 because thats as far back as the Climate Prediction Centers data goes
Winter of 1984/85
Winter of 1989/90
Winter of2003/04
I will look into some more analogs when the October weather pattern gets established

Toot, october will be the main month to look at to really have a great idea on this upcoming winter imo! The noaa winter outlook should be out between beg-mid october. I personally wouldnt issue it until end of october....or better yet mid november. Lets all pray and hope its colder than last few winters so we can have some winter events to track maybe for us

I dont put much stock into NOAA's winter outlooks myself mainly because they dont give much reasoning behind how they come to there conclusions. October will definately lend us a more clear picture with the snow advance index and the Arctic Oscillation correlation.Mrgolf wrote: The noaa winter outlook should be out between beg-mid october. Until then the JAMSTEC and CFS continue to look pretty warm but the CFS is a little more forgiving when it comes to temperature but again I dont put much stock into these models this far out either.

Re: Farmers Almanac Says bundle up this winter
if that gulf of ALASKA low pattern doesn't start to fade, this winter most likely we will be in the screw zone again... the pacific right now at least looks very shitty though its still tad early and time for change, but that pattern just don't go away overnight... that will present us with a positive nao ao as the trough will be persistent out west.... like to see this break down my end of October at least.

Re: Farmers Almanac Says bundle up this winter
DT started this crap by posting on FB about a "Raging Pacific Jet"! The pattern in place is very variable as usual this time of year and Alaska lows will be replaced by highs and vice verse! Everytime it is fall or winter and people see an intense low pressure system in the GOA its "Oh god..please help us..we're gonna torch this winter" Gulf of Alaska lows are quite common during October. However this post does not mean I think its gonna be frigid this winter. Im still bent on what I think the winter will turn out like..alot of mixed signals!
Re: Farmers Almanac Says bundle up this winter
Lol, we've been here before, Toot's right, to worry about the position of a Gulf of AK low right now, or really any other low or high pressure right now, as it pertains to winter is not the best way to spend time haha. Were it January already, I'd be concerned, but it's not. That said, I do hope we get a HP in the Gulf of AK, a nice Greenland Block, and a split flow. Yeah, I'd be happy with those 3 things, but even with the GOA low, we can still have a good winter storm or 2 ala this past year, yeah, yeah, I'm sure you w and middle TN folks say what storm, as it was only true this year for NE TN, but, it could have been true for you guys just as easy as it was for us. Point is, smile and enjoy the weather. As JB says "It's the only weather you got"
