Re: Possible April Freeze
Clouds have pretty much departed the area. Dewpoints are in the mid 20's. However, winds are expected to stay near 5-15 mph, with gusts to 25mph overnight. If that happens, enough mixing should occur to keep a major widespread frost at bay. If winds calm, and the boundry layer decouples, then we'll get much cooler than currently forecasted.
With the strong low still nearby, hopefully, the NWS is correct in keeping winds strong enough to prevent everyone's maters from getting smacked with frost. However, if you live in a sheltered area that is protected from wind, I'd still be a little concerned. Told my folks up in southeast Ky to cover their garden, just in case.

Nice post...I think the winds will keep the frost at bay tonight except for sheltered areas. Tomorrow may be a different story tho...but it may not get cold enough tomorrow
Re: Possible April Freeze
Frost free here. Got down to the upper 30's, but there is a good breeze still blowing, and I didn't see any stars this morning, so some clouds must have moved back in overnight.

Re: Possible April Freeze
We only managed to make it down to 39 where I live. However, I did notice that Shelbyville, where we moved from pulled a classic freefall that happens so many times in these cases. I can't explain it, but they dropped to 28 this am under clear skies and calm winds. I would imagine the frost was very extensive

Hopefully, last night was the frost finale until Autumn.

I think its generally in cities/towns that are surrounded by large hills. I noticed last night at 10, some areas were in the low 50s, while others were in the low 40s, and there didn't seem to be a pattern to it, which leads me to believe its elevation related.

Lets see...there was dogwood winter about a week or so ago...we have just experienced blackberry winter. So that still leaves whippoorwill winter yet to come
Re: Possible April Freeze
Ah, but the whippoorwills have already been singing at my house at sunset, my friend. Our crazy premature spring warmth brought them very early this year. I usually don't hear them until early May. So maybe this cold spell was both "winters" wrapped into one with the freaky late season snow and all.

I was just joshing ...lol I havent seen much of a whippoorwill winter in several years. I think the fact that it is the last folklore winter before summer its probably alot less noticeable. That's probably due to how hard it is to actually get really cold weather in may.

Or it may be that most people don't even know what a whippoorwill sounds like anymore.

My maters, peppers, green beans, and basil are going in the ground come monday!
Re: Possible April Freeze
Climatology says go for it. So, if in the eventuality it does come a whippoorwill winter, blame it, not me.
