The southern half of tennessee should get in on the action today as the warm front pushed back into tennessee. Most of the storms should develop south of the front because that is where the most lift is and that is also where the outflow boundry it. I think we can expect numerous reports of hail and some reports of damaging winds.

Storms lived up to their hype this morning. Branches down everywhere as I came into work. I lost a medium sized white oak tree. It was snapped off half way up the trunk. It had 'issues.' The squirrels lived in a hole inside the tree, so I assumed it was hollow. I guess they will have to find a new home now, and I have a mess to clean up. The whole top of the tree is laying down in the yard, and leaning up against another tree. mad

Lots of people at work talking about downed trees. Seems there was quite a bit of damage in Knox County, particularly over near Emory/Tazwell. yikes

LOL…a little word play goin’ on there, I see. smartass

Yeah, hated to lose an oak, even one that’s old and hollow. They grow slow, so not easily replaced. But nothing I can do but mourn and move on. tongue

The wind was crazy. I think I had at least one gust to 40-45 mph (or higher). Blew the chairs off my porch, and out into the middle of the yard.

From JKL:

UPDATE...
ISSUED AT 920 AM EDT THU APR 26 2012

RAIN IS ON ITS WAY OUT THIS MORNING AND SHOULD CLEAR OUR CWA BOUNDARIES BY 11 AM. THERE WILL LIKELY BE A LULL BEFORE ANY ADDITIONAL SHOWERS OR STORMS CAN REDEVELOP. STILL PLENTY OF ELEVATED CAPE AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONTAL BOUNDARY TO THE NORTH...SO ONCE WE HAVE A CHANCE TO DESTABILIZE THE LOWER LEVELS...THINGS COULD GET INTERESTING AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. DEWPOINTS ARE SURGING INTO INTO THE LOWER 60S IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY...SO WITH SOME CLEARING SPREADING INTO THE AREA...WE COULD DESTABILIZE FAIRLY QUICKLY BY EARLY TO MID AFTERNOON. THIS WILL BE MONITORED OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS.

Any storms that form in KY will follow the same path as these did this morning--southeast into East Tennessee.

.UPDATE...
EXPIRED WW189 IN MID TN AS STORMS HAVE MOVED INTO E TN. ANOTHER ROUND OF STORMS EXPECTED THIS AFTN WITH APPROACH OF COLD FRONT. COVERAGE OF ACTIVITY LOOKS TO BE SCATTERED...MAINLY IN SOUTHERN AND EASTERN SECTIONS. SOME STORMS MAY CONTAIN LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS.

Cloud coverage has become pretty extensive over the TN Valley region. Our high was forecast to be 78F. Right now, were in the mid 60's, at a point in the day we should be approaching that high. Not sure how it will affect coverage of storms this evening. Already have some intense cells popping, but coverage is pretty isolated right now.

rock on MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0591
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0123 PM CDT THU APR 26 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...SRN/ERN KY...NRN TN

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 261823Z - 262030Z

TSTMS SHOULD INITIATE ALONG A WEAKLY CONVERGENT COLD FRONT DROPPING
SEWD ACROSS KY. A MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS AMIDST STRONG
DEEP-LAYER SHEAR WOULD BE FAVORABLE FOR SUPERCELLS/ORGANIZED
CLUSTERS PRIMARILY PRODUCING LARGE HAIL AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS.
THE PROBABILITY OF A WW ISSUANCE IS 80 PERCENT BY 20Z.

18Z SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACED AN ARCING COLD FRONT FROM NEAR UNI TO 20
S LEX TO PAH. SURFACE WINDS HAVE LARGELY VEERED TO W/SWLY IN THE
WARM SECTOR...LIMITING CONVERGENCE ALONG THE BOUNDARY. BUT CU APPEAR
TO BE INCREASING IN THE FRONTAL ZONE...AND ASCENT SHOULD BE AIDED BY
A WEAK MID-LEVEL IMPULSE/SPEED MAX MOVING SE ACROSS THE MIDWEST/OH
VALLEY. ABUNDANT STRATOCU HAS RESULTED IN BROKEN TO OVERCAST CLOUD
COVERAGE OVER MUCH OF TN AND EXTREME SRN KY. BETWEEN THIS STRATOCU
DECK AND THE FRONTAL ZONE WOULD BE THE MOST LIKELY ZONE OF TSTM
INITIATION IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. WITH A BROAD SWATH OF LOWER
TO MIDDLE 60S SURFACE DEW POINTS...MLCAPE OF 1500 TO 2500 J/KG IS
PREVALENT. GIVEN EFFECTIVE SHEAR AROUND 40 KT...THIS SETUP SHOULD
YIELD A FEW SUPERCELLS/ORGANIZED CLUSTERS PRIMARILY PRODUCING LARGE
HAIL ALONG WITH LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS.

Looks like SPC thinks something is going to pop in the sunny area in southern Kentucky, just north of TN and south of the front, and then move southeast toward us. Makes sense to me.

Sure didn't take them long to develop and go severe. Still cloudy here, cool and damp. Temps right around 70F
