We got 1 1/2 to 3 depending on where you were. Schools are close wed. Some roads are close. It took some of my friends 4 to 5 hours to get home today. Temp 18. Jed 33 hope you get 5.

Re: Winter Wx Discussion 2013/14
Thanks Windstorm! It will be close I may possibly eek out 5, but the most impressive thing about this to me is how cold this snow is and how powdery it is! Were there any wind it would have been blown all over the place. It's crazy how this whole thing came together I do expect some major compaction though overnight and esp tomorrow with sublimation and melting, but I can't say it enough this was a heck of a storm for E TN!

Re: Winter Wx Discussion 2013/14
Yes it has been awhile. I ended up with 5in which is my biggest since last Jan. Epic thundersnow. No thundersnow this time, but it was much prettier to look at due to how long it lasted. Snowed for 13hrs today nonstop!! Now that is EPIC in itself just that it snowed so long.

The Euro throws up a monster storm and it's even inside 180. Hold out all the hope you can muster, this one is a great storm for all of Tennessee. It would continue snowing long after this, the storm is still in S Texas at this point.

We had 6 degree this morning 1 1/2 snow on ground. Jed33 good for you that you got 5 inches of snow. I will be very interested in how far below normal temps were for the month of January ..

Re: Winter Wx Discussion 2013/14
Wow, this morning's low was -5.3. That's the lowest I've seen since the early 90's (however I was overseas from '96 to '05).
Re: Winter Wx Discussion 2013/14
I didn't make it quite as low as some of y'all did this morning I guess bc for some reason the clouds never quite cleared out till about 30min before sunrise. Still got down to 0 here at the house

Wow, what a wild ride yesterday. Ended up with right at 4 inches here in west Knoxville. Roads were, and still are in spots, horrible!! Many many wrecks.

And here's NASA's Aqua satellite image from today at 3:30 ES. Looking at this image, and the Look Rock/Purchase Knob web-cams in the smokies, looks like the mountains are losing their snow quicker than us! I am kinda surprised how quick its melting around here, it's amazing what some solar radiation can quickly do even with 20 degree temps

Re: Winter Wx Discussion 2013/14
Hoping we can squeeze out 2 more snows in the 2-4" range before spring.
Re: Winter Wx Discussion 2013/14
The snow is melting yes, but it is also sublimating. Last night on the news, Todd Howell showed where the moisture content of Knoxville's official snow of 3in at the airport had a water content of 0.15 the ratios were around 20-25:1 whereas normal ratios are around 10:1. So, take a 4-5in snow with probably only .20 water content, and sure enough this is what you get when the sun hits it. It compacts, sublimates (evaporates) and melts. Too bad it will virtually be gone except in the shade by tomorrow! Hopefully this isn't the last, but if it is, this brings me up to a seasonal total of 9in, which is avg for Morristown based on the new averages, old was around 11in. Amazing what so many years of bad snowfall does to your averages. Hopefully we are entering a new time of snowy winters. One can dream right!
